Tangram 3DS has been an integral part of our marketing efforts. Too many times clients have a problem envisioning the space they will live in, and Tangram's renderings have helped to bridge that gap. We have found that for a fraction of the cost, that renderings capture the space sometimes better then an actual photograph. Tangram has also been able to come up with creative solutions when we run into problems, and has been an invaluable vendor to us in every regard. I highly recommend their services if you are looking to 'think outside of the box', and take your marketing efforts to the next level.

Berry Residence
Description:
Project:
The construction site is located on a hillside near Vienna, Austria. Situated on the southern slope, the house will overlook Vienna. For this reason, the common living areas are located on the upper floor. Wonderful views of the city are provided through the generous use of glass and the construction of a large terrace. The various functional areas of the house are arranged in staggered levels with no loss of space or light. The bedrooms and baths are located on the entry level of the house. A large domed roof light over the stairs provides good lighting all the way down to the street level and opens up the entry area to the upper level.
The house was conceived as a passive solar house using the timber construction method and will be sided with light colored panels.
From the street-level carport, a service elevator will carry people and goods to the upper level.
Testimonial:
Our architectural office commissioned Tangram 3ds with the visualization and animation of a single family residence we had designed for an (Austrian) artist. The client wanted photo quality exterior and interior views as well as a 90-second walkthrough animation of the building. We got several estimates for the visualization and animation work. Tangram 3ds offered the best quality work for the price. Our work with Tangram 3ds proved to be extremely advantageous. Our expectations, which were high to begin with, were exceeded. Our client had a very precise design concept in mind, so good communication was of the utmost importance in turning this concept into reality. With the help of Tangram 3ds, we were able to provide our client with a photo realistic rendering of our design, including materials, color selections, lighting, vegetation, and surroundings, which gave the client a true impression of his future home. The architectural 3d animation or walkthrough was especially important to our client who is a film enthusiast. The ability to “walk through” his virtual home heightened his anticipation of the finished project while providing him with a powerful tool for marketing the house as a future location for filming commercials and movies.
As a result of our positive experience, we will continue to work with Tangram 3ds in the future. We believe that the marketing for future projects will be faster and more effective with the services provided by Tangram 3ds. Visualization products of this quality can boost sales even before construction completion.

Al Bateen Tower, Jumeirah Beach Road, Dubai UAE
Description:
Project:
The Al Bateen Tower at Jumeirah Beach is poised to propel the concept of living environments to a new horizon. Its design is born from the site itself, and the architecture can be considered an encounter with fluidity - a structure that reflects the flowing transition of forces from sand to sea. The building’s shape will constantly change as it is experienced from different vantage points, and as such, it represents not only the site’s dramatic transition from desert to sea, but also the dynamic transformations happening in the current and future Dubai.
The project will include a G-plus-50-story luxury apartment high-rise and a G-plus-30-story five-star hotel with an in-house business center, ballroom, restaurants, state-of-the-art health club, spa and beach club. Lush landscaping will define the site and will also be used to soften the internal edge of a garden wall that will surround and protect the grounds. The Al Bateen will offer both luxury residential apartments and 5-star hotel accommodations, designed within two separate and dynamically related towers. Together the two curved towers will form a building unique to all of Dubai, and their carefully-oriented views will offer residents and guests unrivaled vistas of the sea and the city. Residents and visitors will have not only spectacular views, they will have - as part of their own front foyer and front yard - uninterrupted access to business facilities, upscale restaurants and shops, luxury beach club amenities, elegantly landscaped terraces, swimming pools, sandy beaches, and the sea beyond.
From the lushly landscaped exterior to modern interior, the architecture will set a stage of quiet elegance through the use of clean, simple and dramatic forms. Sweeping canopies and carefully designed entries will transition residents and visitors into light-filled lobbies. On the floors above, as a resident or guest opens the heavy and secure door to their apartment, their focus will be swept away by a view that stretches to a distant horizon. Only after catching one’s breath, will one notice the sound and secure feeling that the unique residence offers with magnificent stone floors, rich wood cabinetry, doors and timber works, wall niches for the display of art, molded ceilings with integrated lights, and other elegant finishes.
Simplicity, elegance and quality: those are the words that will brand this project. It will be home and host to the best that Dubai has to offer, and will bring together an international community where locals can experience a freshness that lets them become foreigners, and foreigners will feel a welcoming luxury that lets them become locals.
Testimonial:
Tangram 3DS has been instrumental not only in providing the 3D renderings of the project but in helping us with developing the design by modeling the entire building and showing us all the different angels and details of the model. They were always very responsive and ended up delivering more products than initially discussed in the same amount of time. Like always, it was a pleasure working with them.

West End Vesta
Description:
The West End Development
Equity Residential’s West End Development will bring new vitality and an expanded range of options for those who choose to make their home in Boston’s West End. Designed by the widely recognized firm, Elkus/Manfredi Architects, the new development will consist of five new buildings, creating a campus setting on 5.25 acres. The project will bring 310 new residential rental units – a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments, as well as townhouses – to the West End that will strengthen and enhance the residential character of this Boston neighborhood. The project will also provide for a significantly larger and improved landscaped setting designed by the award-winning landscape architecture firm of Carol. R. Johnson Associates.
To maximize the leasing velocity of the summer months, Tangram 3DS was employed to “create the reality of the finished buildings - inside and out” as a tool to help pre-lease apartment homes.

US Marshals Museum
Description:
Project:
In 2007, the United States Marshals Service announced plans to build a
museum in Fort Smith, Arkansas to honor their 200-year history.
Situated on the bank of the Arkansas River, the museum faces the border
of Oklahoma, which in the early 19th century divided the U.S.
territories from the western frontier. Today the project is a key
element in Fort Smith’s plans to redevelop the riverfront as a center
of culture and commerce.
The design team at Cambridge Seven Associates tapped Tangram 3DS to
create a series of compelling renderings for design presentation and
fundraising. Both the museum’s contemporary form and panoramic setting
were vital elements in capturing the drama and grandeur of the
project. Tangram worked closely with designers to develop their
schematic model and drawings into a stylistic representation that
bridged the gap between concept and reality.

Tasked with revitalizing the main lobby and
public corridors of the 150 Federal Street, a thirty-story office tower in
Boston, TRO Jung | Brannen teamed up with Tangram 3DS to offer their clients
visual aids that communicated their design intentions.
Renovations include large stained cherry and
beech wood art panels, new wood and backlit glass front reception desk with
state-of-the-art security provisions, and updated lighting scheme featuring
daylight lamping. The design also
features new lobby seating with black bamboo planters and an interactive
building directory.
Working from existing hardcopy blueprints,
on-site photography, and the architect's design sketches, Tangram created
multiple 3D interior perspectives as well as a photo montage of the exterior
building's redesigned sidewalk and signage configuration. Recreating the lobby space as a
three-dimensional computer model allowed the architects to experiment with
different design schemes as well as new materials and textures. The response TRO J|B received from these images
allowed them to hone their designs and ensure their client's satisfaction with

The Westin Providence
Description:
Project Description
This project was a 400,000 GSF mixed-use tower expansion to the Westin Providence Hotel. It included a 200 hotel guestroom addition to the existing Westin with 12,000 GSF ground-floor retail/restaurant, 102 condominiums, and 150 private parking spaces. Designed to the latest International Energy Code, with CIP concrete structure, brick and precast enclosure, insulated low-e windows and terrace doors, and Energy Star appliances.
Tangram was involved at the project’s inception, reproducing the existing Westin Providence tower as well as the neighboring city blocks and architecture in a 3D computer model. The new residential tower was refined over the course of the project until the city and owners were satisfied with its design. This long-term collaboration made it possible for Tangram to deliver revised renderings on-demand throughout the design phase, with the final renderings available to the owners for sales and marketing use.

We worked closely and intensively with Tangram 3DS on the Westin beginning with the schematic design through final client and city regulatory approvals. This schedule was demanding and often required collaboration and production within a short turnaround to meet city-imposed project deadlines. Working with Tangram 3DS was the best solution for this process, with Tangram being able to intuitively respond to design team changes from (often) sketchy information. Our office continues to work with Tangram 3DS on most of our design projects.

Dubai Development Concept
Description:
Project Description
Tangram produced this image for TRO Jung|Brannen as part of a design presentation to their client in Dubai. The project involved producing massing studies and preliminary models, from which ultimately this angle was chosen and developed into a finished rendering. Once materials were applied, the designers asked Tangram to produce several iterations allowing them to see and react to multiple color schemes and refine their concept.
Ultimately the design was rejected and has since gone into extensive redesign, however even in such cases where a rendering sends architects back to the drawing board, rarely are clients displeased with the renderings. In the end Tangram’s images always contribute to a design result that is liked by all parties involved.

18 Congress Street is a 56,000 sf mixed-use project in the heart of the Historic District in Portsmouth. It includes underground parking, ground level retail and second floor office space. Floors three through five consist of eighteen luxury condominiums. The structure is a steel frame with brick masonry cladding and a high level of stone and pre-cast detailing.
Tangram was involved during the design phase of the project to develop renderings that proved to the Portsmouth Historic District Committee that the new construction would complement the surrounding architecture. The renderings gained further use by Olde Port Properties in their marketing campaign while building construction was underway.

The total built area of 75,000 GSF is subdivided equally amongst three buildings, which will be connected in the new design. There is extensive reworking of two of the buildings to accommodate a sanctuary that seats 600, a social hall that can accommodate 400 banquet style, chapel, administrative offices, and a new school wing for up to 360 students.
In addition, there is extensive reworking of the existing site to create gardens and outdoor gathering spaces for a variety of worship, social and school related activities. Finally, the conversion of these office buildings into a religious institution for a wide variety of program spaces and uses brought out the creative energies of our team and the client to create a new and bold vision for their new home.
Client Testimonials
"The Tangram team did a wonderful job for us on this proposed renovation/expansion of an office park into a new home for the BJBE congregation. The visual still and animation images showing us and our client what the new design and interior spaces would feel like were incredibly realistic, and Stefan and his team have been a real pleasure to work with on this project. Having never done a religious building as a project type before, Tangram met and exceeded our expectations in a timely and courteous fashion. I would recommend them to anyone without hesitation, and we are hiring them to do more work for other clients who were very impressed with what they did for us for BJBE."

Vienna’s Schafberg Garden House
Description:
Vienna’s Schafberg
Garden House by Architect Johann Lettner: a Green Oasis in an Urban Landscape
Vienna’s
allotment gardens have long since provided city dwellers in the Austrian
capital a welcome opportunity to commune with nature. Small garden lots
(approx. 220 m2) on the Schafberg, a hilly green area in Vienna’s
west end with beautiful views of the city, are particularly sought after. Since
the 1990s, zoning changes have made it possible to construct year-round housing
on these lots under restrictive conditions.
To retain the green space and garden character of the area as much as
possible, construction is limited to two stories plus cellar on an area of 50 m2
per building lot. Furthermore,
access to this auto-free zone is granted to small vehicles for a limited time
only during construction. The design of a year-round luxury residence on this hillside
site required the greatest attention not only to aesthetics but also to space,
energy, and time efficiency.
The
Schafberg Garden House by architect Johann Lettner offers an elegant and
supremely “green” solution to the many challenges posed by both zoning
regulations and specific site conditions. Designed on split levels facing the
southwest and positioned to create private outdoor areas, these eco-friendly
houses fit into the hillside seamlessly and make full use of passive house
construction techniques, which render conventional heating systems unnecessary.
The selection of building materials is largely determined by the requirements
of passive house technology as well as zoning restrictions: the extensive use
of glass allows for an optimal use of solar energy, materials offer super
insulation values and building elements must be easy to transport and/or
dismantle. Large windows, terraces and rooftop terraces expand living areas to
include their lovely surroundings. The
minimalist design of the interiors with its subdued color palette and simple
yet elegant material selection lets the views command the scene, further
blurring the line between indoors and outdoors.

Located in the Jamaica Plain section of Boston, adjacent to the Longwood Medical area, The Brewery Lofts will be an eclectic mix of old and new. New construction will provide structured parking and additional residential units. The project will also include a 5,000 square-foot interior courtyard, which will retain its original cobblestones.

Penny Savings Bank Residencies
Description:
Project Description
The Boston Penny Savings Bank, circa 1911, was adapted for residential use by Finegold Alexander + Associates. The plan called for complete restoration of the existing building's facade while the interiors were gutted and rebuilt. Atop the two-story building was added a three-story glass cube to house apartment units. The walls of the cube were built deliberately askew to the existing bank's footprint to separate the two architectural styles spatially.
Tangram's renderings of the Boston Penny Savings Bank were the Stonegate Group's first marketing image of the project that depicted the building in its refurbished state and the addition of the glass cube. As such they have seen use not only for marketing, but also for generating public interest in this grand renovation at the corner of Washington and Union Park streets.

SNCI NYC Tower
Description:
Sustainable Vertical Neighborhood Proposed
This iconic 950 foot tall residential tower is proposed for a micro- urban site in New York City.
Designed by solus4, an architecture and planning firm, the tower is a vertical neighborhood creating an efficient and valuable
use for a small and otherwise underutilized water’s edge site. Uniquely, the tower is designed by solus4 using their SNCI principals
(Sustainable Neighborhood Collaborative Initiative). Applying these principles to a vertical neighborhood requires the full engagement
of the design team, the building team, the financing team and the owners.
With a cross-section of G plus 55, there are 50 full-floor three bedroom plus apartments planned at approximately 3,000 square feet
each served by high speed destination selective elevators. The distinctive shape of this tower comes from its innovative structure
and energy generating systems. The entire structural system, designed by LeMessurier Consultants, is in-situ concrete with flat slabs
supported by columns and shear walls embedded in the extruded core shaft leaving large portions of the perimeter free for the 14 foot
floor to ceiling glass.
The exterior glazing makes up one of the tallest proposed hybrid double glazed skins. While the initial intent of the double skin is
to enhance the thermal barrier thereby controlling heat gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, an interesting added benefit
will be the chimney effect at the external surface. Strategically placed mini-turbines take advantage of the vertical air movement
to generate supplementary power. Balconies at each floor provide exterior space for the resident while adding a variable shading screen
to further control glare and heat gain. Temperature controlled window shading with personal preference overrides will provide for
individual comfort requirements in any season.
The 950 foot tall blade mast is cantilevered off the concrete frame. Its entire outside surface as well as certain portions of the exterior
glazing is covered with transparent thin film photo voltaic panels projected to provide – in combination with other passive and active
sustainable systems, the majority of the power requirement for the building. Initial calculations show the building generating excess power
at certain times of the year thereby a possible source of income to the residence owners. Keeping to the SNCI principles for energy savings
strategies, the building will have no parking except for a quantity of all-electric cars in a variety of model configurations
(sedans, SUVs, mini-cars, etc.) that will be garaged on-site and owned and operated by the common ownership of the residences using a card
access system.
The balconies, in addition to providing living space and shading, also act as rainwater collectors. The rainwater, rather than being shed to
the street, will be harvested and added to the grey water recycling system. Along with fully integrated energy management systems, each
apartment will have its own mini-plant for comfort control, domestic water and recycling thereby ensuring a stand-alone capability and
reduced reliance on central systems.
The street level base of the tower will include – in addition to the entrance/exit to the all electric car garage – a multi level common
social space including neighborhood retail and food outlets, mini-produce market, terraced cafes, recreation, gym, swimming, museum/gallery
space and office/studio space for residents.
Not only will this building provide residences with outstanding views in an outstanding location convenient to all parts of the City, but
will also place the owners of the residence in the forefront of low impact and sustainable communities.

New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH)
Description:
Tangram 3DS, a firm specializing in visualization and computer animation, announced it’s collaboration with E. Kevin Schopfer AIA, RIBA. Together, the companies have designed and presented a bold new urban platform. New Orleans Arcology Habitat (NOAH) is a proposed urban Arcology (architecture and ecology), whose philosophic underpinnings rest in combining large scale sustainability with concentrated urban structures, and in this case a floating city.
Tangram 3DS worked with Schopfer to visualize this unique concept and structure. Starting from basic sketches, Tangram 3DS transformed Schopfer’s ideas into visuals and an animation. “Our work helps Kevin convey his concept to the City of New Orleans, investors, the media, and public,” said Stefan Vittori, president and founder of Tangram 3DS, LLC. “To be able to visualize a design project in 3D and through animation is absolutely vital when attempting to sell a design concept that may at first glance be hard to grasp,” adds Vittori.
Why a floating city? There are three major challenges to building in New Orleans. The first challenge is to overcome both the physical and psychological damages of recurring severe weather patterns. Though repopulation has begun, the need to provide a stabilized and safe environment is paramount to a long-term recovery and economic well being of New Orleans. The second challenge is that New Orleans has been built at and below sea levels, which creates a consistently high water table and makes it prone to flooding and storm surges. The third challenge is that New Orleans is built on soil condition that consists of thousands of feet of soft soil, silt and clay. These conditions make building large-scale concentrated structures difficult. “Believing that NOAH is a viable plan, our solution to overcome these challenges is to take advantage of these seemingly conflicting issues with the introduction of a floating urban platform. This solution is deceptively simple, using water as a controlled, naturally occurring, bearing foundation, is perfectly feasible and practical,” states Schopfer.
As depicted in the 3D renderings by Tangram, given the design's massive scale -- nearly 1,200' tall with a footprint nearly 1/3 of a mile in diameter -- it was clear that Tangram's imagery would need to depict a significant amount of downtown New Orleans to contextualize the project. A 3D model of the downtown buildings was combined with satellite and aerial survey imagery to build a highly-detailed context model in which NOAH could be placed. This allowed Tangram to create a wide range of imagery, including aerials that covered dozens of city blocks, which effectively communicated the ambitious scale of the NOAH project.
When it came time to produce the animation, the massive scene scale combined with the river and dense activity of the area were extremely challenging to reproduce faithfully in motion. The two teams worked closely to build passes of animated elements that VFX Direct would include in their final composite of the animation, along with additional water, smoke, and lighting effects that made the imagery pop.
A triangulate shape has been chosen as the basis for NOAH, given the fact that a triangle is inherently the most rigid of all structural framing systems. The triangle also allows for an “open” frame configuration, dividing NOAH into three separate “towers” converging at the top. The intent of this open system is to allow all severe weather to in effect “blow through” the structure in any direction with the minimum of massing interference. To further dissipate wind loads, the outer edges are curved and tilted.
“This is a project of tremendous potential which pushes beyond current expectations for New Orleans and places it in the forefront of the new age of urban growth possibilities,” adds Schopfer. “We hope to one day see it become reality, and with Tangram's unique experience and expertise, that reality comes alive today.”

Portsmouth Naval Shipyard
Description:
In July of 2007, facility management officials from the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY) in Kittery, Maine, came to Tangram 3DS. They were seeking a modern, high-tech presentation that would represent the expertise and skills of the yard's 200+ year history. To that end, Tangram went to work creating a fully detailed model of Seavey's Island on which the yard is located, including nearly 300 unique buildings, dry docks, cranes, bridges, and other infrastructure elements. It was understood by the entire team from the beginning that this would be the largest visualization project any of them had undertaken.
The Shipyard was founded in 1800, and many of the historic structures on the island are still in use to this day. Tangram's work depended on a wide variety of resources, from modern civil survey CAD plans and digital photography to scans of original blueprints that were stored in Naval archives. Each structure was modeled individually, reviewed by PNSY's facility managers for accuracy, and then positioned on a 3D contoured model of the island. In addition to the full island model, Tangram was asked to produce more than 50 perspective renderings of both future proposed buildings and existing renovations.
In June of 2008, Tangram commissioned a helicopter flight and a videographer to shoot high-definition aerial footage of the island. The film would serve as the introduction for the presentation, introducing the audience to the yard, it's proximity to the historic city of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and easy access to both the I-95 Interstate corridor and the Atlantic Ocean.
Tangram's team stabilized and motion tracked the 5-minute flight path and composited its 3D island model into the video, allowing future updates to be shown animated and in context of its surroundings.
Tangram worked closely with PNSY for 9 months to complete the model and building renderings before the first images of the entire island were able to be produced. Utilizing the Navy photography and photos taken during Tangram's helicopter flight, the island's surface and buildings were fully textured. Finally, over 3,000 trees were planted on the model before its final images were produced, bringing the island's total poly-count to just under 9 million.
All the materials were then wrapped into a Flash presentation with a comprehensive interactive interface, allowing PNSY officials to elegantly convey data on all of the island's maintenance and construction projects.
The presentation is a vision of the future, a vision that is intended to maintain PNSY's reputation of excellence in the field for many decades to come.
In 1800, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the oldest continuously operated shipbuilding facility built by the United States Navy. Originally used for warship construction, the yard has been on the cutting edge of sail, steam, and nuclear vessel technology since its inception. Beginning in World War I, the yard exclusively built submarines for the U.S. Navy, including this historic Albacore in 1953, widely renown for being the first modern attack sub design. The yard christened its last new vessel in 1969, and has since operated as the Navy's premiere base for maintaining and servicing its nuclear sub fleet.

Atlantic City Holocaust Memorial Competition
Description:
Tangram 3DS recently partnered with Luca Andrisani on a submission for the Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial (ACBHM, Inc.) Competition. Andrisani came to Tangram for multiple views of his design, seeking to refine his ideas through a collaborative relationship with our team.
Andrisani's design features an infinity pool that cascades in several channels down the sides of the structure and is lit at night. The pool reflects the sea and sky and visually unifies the pavilion with its surroundings. The interior features LED strips embedded in the wood plank decking, casting a soft glow that invites passersby to come inside and rest. There they will notice a photo-mosaic graphic of the Tree of Life printed into the concrete ceiling, featuring thousands of photos of holocaust survivors taken years after.
The ACHBM, a non-profit organization, seeks to present a prominently located memorial at the site of an existing seaside pavilion. This location has an estimated 10 million visitors each year and is viewed as an ideal spot for a vivid visual statement that will speak to people of all races and origins. The intention of the committee is to foster awareness and commemorate rather than explain or depict the Holocaust.
This international, two-stage design competition consists of a digitally submitted first round to be judged anonymously with six to ten finalists qualifying for stage two. All presentations will be publicly exhibited and judged at a convocation of the jurors. These jurors include Daniel Libeskind, B.Arch. M.A. BDA AIA, the first Cultural Ambassador for Architecture appointed by the U.S. Department of State, and Dr. Michael Berenbaum, a Professor of Jewish Studies and Project Director for the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Description:
Tangram 3DS recently partnered with architect Alfonso Lopez of Solus4 on a submission for the Bali 2010: Marine Research Center Competition. Tangram worked collaboratively with Lopez throughout the design process to create numerous views of his vision. The competition, proposed by Arquitectum and Universitas Pelita Harapan in Indonesia, seeks to address the need for tsunami research and preparation in response to the devastation caused by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. Arquitectum organizes international competitions that bring together architects and public or private organizations seeking diverse and innovative concepts for upcoming projects.Tangram's team worked closely with Lopez, producing imagery that allowed for constant refinement of his design. Brainstorming sessions and sketches were transformed into realistic renderings that were used for critique and clarification of ideas.Lopez's proposal uses the elliptical pattern and cross section diagram of a tsunami wave as its conceptual basis. This results in an aesthetically imposing form that seamlessly integrates with its aquatic environment.Lopez's design features underwater labs, an aquatic garden, sea water pool, swimming pool terrace, bar and an auditorium. With spaces located above and under water, scientists can take full advantage of the incredible landscape surrounding the project. The center will also serve as a model for sustainable design with its use of tidal wave energy generation, natural ventilation, rain water collection, passive solar energy, and high reflectance fiber glass materials.

Boston Arcology (BOA)
Description:
Highlights of the Boa:
* It will be capable of housing 15,000 people distributed in hotels,
offices, retail, museums, condominiums, and a new city hall.
* The massing of Boa takes its cue from the built environment of Boston
proper and as such exudes a rigorous geometric format. That format is
further emphasized by the scaling of the golden rectangle whose
proportions are: 1: 1.618.
* Within this golden rectangle, Boa’s design alignments have a unique relationship with the Boston common.
What appear to be random projections of massing are actually fashioned
as a vertical construct of the “common.” These diagonals are held in
check by a fixed border as if a rigid urban edge.
* Because of its scale, Boa is positioned perpendicular to the
waterfront, preserving view corridors and general development massing.
* Sky gardens will be inserted into the three main towers every 30
floors. These sky gardens provide landscaped glass enclosed atria. In
addition to their practical application of additional sunlit units, the
“sky gardens” will create a sense of neighborhood presence and support
a range of sustainable initiatives. Vertical commuting within
Boa will be supported by a series of local and express transfer floors.
* Boa is geared to an all pedestrian environment. Accordingly, only
select horizontally based areas will be fitted with moving walkways
and/or electric train carriers.
* Boa is designed to expand the horizon of sustainability and will seek LEED certification.
* Boa will eliminate the need for cars within the urban structure to
create a carbon neutral entity. Some of these elements are secured wind
turbines, fresh water recovery and storage systems, passive glazing
system, sky garden heating/cooling vents, gray water treatment, solar
array banding panels, and harbor based water turbines.
* A massive park system platform (pedestrian only) will be more than
double the current green space allocation for the waterfront of Boston.
Boa is a floating city within a city, and is technically feasible, with the method as follows:
The foundation of Boa is a series of poured concrete cells, which are
combined to form a buoyant platform. The grid of these cells serves as
the foundation for the rigid steel Superstructure
* Though seemingly counter-intuitive, concrete is in fact a viable and
durable floating solution. Oil rigs, barges, and even ships from WWII
all employed this use of concrete to create buoyant objects. With new
self sealing concrete, and other technologies, such structures can
be monitored indefinitely.
* By proportional height, width, length, and weight, this buoyant
platform is estimated to 90 feet, with an additional 15 feet of
“buffer.” Assuming approximately 30-40 ft current depth in the ocean
bed, a “retaining pool” would be sunk into the harbor, giving a
waterline to base dimension of 105 feet. This becomes the fixed
“pool” in which Boa floats as water seeks its own level.
* Boa is proposed as a three phase master plan. Though capable of
program changes and opportunities, the project is geared to a ten year
build-out. Because it is built in the harbor, it will have minimum
impact on existing functions. Further, Boa is designed not to encroach
on existing channels.

he Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (PNSY)
Description:
In July of 2007, facility management officials from the Portsmouth Naval
Shipyard (PNSY) in Kittery, Maine, came to Tangram 3DS. They were
seeking a modern, high-tech presentation that would represent the
expertise and skills of the yard's 200+ year history. To that end,
Tangram went to work creating a fully detailed model of Seavey's Island
on which the yard is located, including nearly 300 unique buildings, dry
docks, cranes, bridges, and other infrastructure elements. It was
understood by the entire team from the beginning that this would be the
largest visualization project any of them had undertaken.
The Shipyard was founded in 1800, and many of the historic structures on
the island are still in use to this day. Tangram's work depended on a
wide variety of resources, from modern civil survey CAD plans and
digital photography to scans of original blueprints that were stored in
Naval archives. Each structure was modeled individually, reviewed by
PNSY's facility managers for accuracy, and then positioned on a 3D
contoured model of the island. In addition to the full island model,
Tangram was asked to produce more than 50 perspective renderings of both
future proposed buildings and existing renovations.
In June of 2008, Tangram commissioned a helicopter flight and a
videographer to shoot high-definition aerial footage of the island. The
film would serve as the introduction for the presentation, introducing
the audience to the yard, it's proximity to the historic city of
Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and easy access to both the I-95 Interstate
corridor and the Atlantic Ocean. Tangram's team stabilized and motion
tracked the 5-minute flight path and composited its 3D island model into
the video, allowing future updates to be shown animated and in context
of its surroundings.
Tangram worked closely with PNSY for 9 months to complete the model and
building renderings before the first images of the entire island were
able to be produced. Utilizing the Navy photography and photos taken
during Tangram's helicopter flight, the island's surface and buildings
were fully textured. Finally, over 3,000 trees were planted on the
model before its final images were produced, bringing the island's total
poly-count to just under 9 million.
All the materials were then wrapped into a Flash presentation with a
comprehensive interactive interface, allowing PNSY officials to
elegantly convey data on all of the island's maintenance and
construction projects. The presentation is a vision of the future, a
vision that is intended to maintain PNSY's reputation of excellence in
the field for many decades to come.
In 1800, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard is the oldest continuously
operated shipbuilding facility built by the United States Navy.
Originally used for warship construction, the yard has been on the
cutting edge of sail, steam, and nuclear vessel technology since its
inception. Beginning in World War I, the yard exclusively built
submarines for the U.S. Navy, including this historic Albacore in 1953,
widely renown for being the first modern attack sub design. The yard
christened its last new vessel in 1969, and has since operated as the
Navy's premiere base for maintaining and servicing its nuclear sub
fleet.

Client Testimonial
Tangram have done a marvellous job in producing a high quality rendering of one of our newest investments for the nearshore market. The subsequent marketing using the image has already paid dividends with new projects coming in. The turn around time and ability of the team to transform engineering drawings and abstract ideas into a clear and realistic picture is really impressive. Thanks the Tangram Team.
